Buying a secondhand Powerwall in Perth: checks before paying

Check ownership, condition, recall status, installation approval, warranty and rebate eligibility before buying a used Powerwall.

In this article

A used Powerwall can look inexpensive beside a new system. Compare the complete installed cost before you pay the seller, including any missing gateway, removal, transport and the work needed at its next address.

A serial number and an installer assessment should come before a deposit. An online listing cannot establish that the battery is safe, supported or suitable for your home.

Used equipment does not become new again.

The Clean Energy Regulator’s battery requirements require an eligible battery to be new and not previously installed or claimed. A previously installed secondhand battery does not meet that new-equipment requirement, even if its seller says no rebate was claimed.

This is a battery rule. An example about replacing solar panels while keeping an inverter is not the basis for deciding a used battery’s eligibility. Have any WA scheme eligibility checked separately.

Ask for the records.

  • Exact model, serial number, proof of ownership and original installation records.
  • Recall status, service history and any damage or storage concerns.
  • Gateway, metering and other equipment included in the sale.
  • Written confirmation of remaining warranty and any transfer or relocation conditions.
  • An installer’s assessment of current approval, connection and installation requirements at your property.

A clear ownership record and a clean serial-number check are useful, but neither guarantees condition, warranty cover or approval to reinstall it.

Powerwall 2 needs particular care.

Some units are affected by a safety recall. Read Tesla’s Australian replacement guidance and our recall guide. Do not infer recall status from its appearance or sale date alone.

The rules for retaining an existing Powerwall 2 while adding Powerwall 3 do not establish that a used Powerwall 2 can be installed at a new address. Ask a qualified installer to check that distinction before buying.

Compare two complete options.

Put the proposed used installation beside a new system with the same useful storage, backup scope and support. Include all site work and show eligible incentives separately. The used option may be less attractive once those costs are known; the result needs an actual quote, not a presumed saving.

For new equipment, the current Powerwall 3 configurator is a starting point. If you have already bought a unit, contact PSW Life Support with its records before booking installation. We need to assess whether we can support the proposed work.
