Tesla Electric in Australia: the position for WA households

Tesla now publishes Australian retail plans. Typical Perth households still cannot switch from Synergy; check access separately from owning Powerwall.

In this article

Tesla Electric is an electricity retail plan, separate from buying a Powerwall. Tesla now publishes Australian plan documents and sign-up information. The earlier description here of an invitation-only trial is no longer a reliable description of the current offer.

For a typical Perth household, the answer is still different: owning a Powerwall does not let you switch your electricity retailer from Synergy.

The published Australian offer.

Tesla’s current plan-document directory lists New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, the ACT and Victoria. It does not list a WA offer. Available networks, tariffs and eligibility need checking for the address; an Australian website is not evidence of national coverage.

The Tesla Electric page describes fixed time-of-use import rates, export credits linked to wholesale prices and management of participating Powerwall systems. Read the applicable plan documents and terms rather than assuming those arrangements apply to a WA electricity account.

The connection and the contract

Perth’s retail rules still apply.

The Economic Regulation Authority says customers using less than 50 MWh a year on Western Power’s distribution network cannot choose their retailer and are supplied by Synergy. That covers a typical Perth household. The threshold concerns annual electricity use, not the battery’s capacity.

Larger customers and properties outside the SWIS have different retail-choice circumstances. Being able to choose a retailer does not establish that Tesla offers a plan at that address. Check the service area and contract directly.

Your existing Powerwall can still be useful.

Storing spare solar, using it later and providing the agreed backup do not require a Tesla Electric retail account. Keep using the tariff and export arrangement on your own bill when assessing the system’s value. Battery charge, available solar and installation design still determine performance.

A VPP and a retail supply contract are different arrangements. If you are considering a WA battery offer, check who controls the battery, the reserve settings, payments and exit terms. Our WA aggregation guide provides local context.

Use the offer you can actually access.

We would not base a Powerwall purchase on future access to an electricity plan that is not offered at your address. Start with your evening use, spare solar, backup needs and installed price. Show any assumed future income separately from savings under your current tariff.

For current equipment and conditional guides, use the Powerwall 3 configurator. A recent bill and your solar details give us a better basis for a conversation than a national promotional headline.
