Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 compatibility: rollout update

The announced compatibility update is now available for eligible systems. Check the current requirements before planning an addition.

Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 compatibility: rollout update
In this article

The March announcement gave Powerwall 2 owners a new direction for adding storage. You can now ask about keeping an eligible existing battery while adding Powerwall 3. The next step is to check the equipment you have, rather than assume the software makes every site compatible.

From announcement to installation.

Tesla supports a defined mixed-system arrangement. Older gateway or metering equipment can change the work required, so the original promise of “no hardware changes” was too broad. A qualified installer must assess and install the addition.

For the current unit limits, gateway exclusions, three-phase output condition and rebate questions, read Adding Powerwall 3 to an existing Powerwall 2 system. That guide carries the detailed requirements in one place.

Keep a working system in perspective.

New compatibility is an option, not a reason to replace equipment that meets your needs. An expired product listing alone does not determine the condition of your installed battery. Check any Tesla app recall notification before arranging expansion.

Powerwall 3P is a separate model. Tesla’s Australian announcement still lists availability and pricing as pending, and says it cannot be combined with Powerwall 2 or Powerwall 3. The earlier expected launch date has been removed.
