Your Powerwall 2 just got a big upgrade path

Tesla has announced that Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems will soon be able to operate together on the same home, no hardware changes required. Here’s what that means for you.

If you already have a Powerwall 2 at home and you’ve been wondering whether you can add more battery storage, the answer is about to get a lot more flexible. Tesla is releasing a software update that will allow Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 units to work together as a single, combined system.

This is a significant change. Until now, these two generations of Powerwall have operated separately, if you wanted to expand your battery storage, your options were limited to adding more Powerwall 2 units. With this update, homeowners with an existing Powerwall 2 installation can add a Powerwall 3 and a Powerwall 3 Expansion unit to expand their system capacity.

No hardware changes needed. Compatibility is delivered entirely through a software (firmware) update; your existing Powerwall 2 installation doesn’t need to be replaced, modified, or retrofitted.

What combinations are supported

Once the update is live, a combined Powerwall system can include up to:

4x

POWERWALL 2

existing units

1x

POWERWALL 3

new unit

3x

PW3 Expansion

expansion units

This gives homeowners a genuine pathway to build a substantial whole-home battery backup without having to start from scratch. A home already running one or two Powerwall 2 units can expand into a much larger system by adding the new Powerwall 3 generation alongside it.

What you don’t need to worry about

One of the most common concerns we hear from existing Powerwall 2 owners is whether their system is still fully above board. The short answer is yes, and this update doesn’t change that.

Your existing Powerwall 2 installation remains fully compliant This applies even if the CEC product listing for your unit has since expired Only the new Powerwall 3 equipment being added needs to meet current certification requirements No need to replace or upgrade your existing gateway or wiring for the Powerwall 2 side of the system

Worth knowing before an upgrade

Three-phase homes: If your property is on a three-phase grid connection, the Powerwall 3 output in a combined system will be capped at 5 kW. This is worth discussing with us at the design stage so we can ensure your configuration is sized appropriately for your needs. Insight: Three-phase Tesla Powerwall 3 is anticipated to be available in Australia late 2026.

There are also two older hardware components that won’t be supported in the new combined configuration:

If you have either of these components, don’t be put off; it just means we’ll need to assess your setup before recommending a path forward. Our team can check this for you quickly when you get in touch.

When is this available?

The update is delivered through Tesla’s firmware system, so there’s nothing you need to download or install yourself. Tesla will notify us as installers when the feature goes live, and we’ll be in contact with Powerwall 2 customers as it rolls out.

Detailed commissioning guidelines and updated installation manuals will be released by Tesla closer to the launch date. In the meantime, if you’re thinking about expanding your battery storage and want to understand your options, we’re happy to talk through it with you now.
